Albany, a port city, is the oldest European settlement in
Western Australia and has a fascinating, rich history which has been preserved
with British and French connections.
At Whale World your guide will lead you on a guided tour of
the historic Whaling Station. Situated
on the site of the old Cheynes Beach Whaling Company in King George Sound at
Albany. Discover the fascinating whaling history of Albany. Whaling ceased
operating mid-1970’s
A highlight of this tour we visit Mt Clarence offering magnificent
360-degree vistas showing of King George Sound, Middleton Beach, Oyster
Harbour, mountains in the distance, Albany suburbs, the windfarm and Princess
Royal Harbour. And to see the Desert Corp Memorial. An enormous statue paying
tribute to Australian and New Zealand soldiers who died in service or were
killed in action in Egypt, Palestine and Syria during World War One. More commonly known as the Light Horse
Memorial,
Garrison is one of the best places to eat in Albany. Garrison
restaurant is on Mt. Adelaide, offering spectacular views of Princess Royal
Harbour.
Also on Mt Adelaide is The National Anzac Centre is
dedicated solely to honouring the Anzac’s of the First World War. Set within
Albany Heritage Park, the Centre offers visitors a deeply personal connection
with the Anzac legend revealed through interactive multimedia displays, unique
artefacts, rare images and film, and audio commentary. This is a ‘must do’
whilst in the region!
Continue to scenic Middleton Beach a favoured swimming spot
for early morning swimming and long walks on the beach.
Continue to Oyster Harbour Fish Traps, the traps were
constructed by the Menang peoples and are over 7,500 years old. The area is
sacred to the Menang and was once a corroboree area that was mostly used during
the warmer months.
The amazing talent of people, Darrel Radcliffe has extended
his hobby into a scenic drive. Enjoy and fascinating Chainsaw Sculpture Drive
to view many chainsaw sculptures while we slowly drive through a bush setting
